The temperature and pressure relief valve (T&P) is an important safety feature that prevents pressure from building up that could damage the water heater and even your home. Over time, corrosion can cause the T&P valve to no longer function as it should. To determine if your T&P valve is working properly, open the valve with your hand by pulling up the lever as shown in the video.
