    INSTALLATION NOTES:
Here I show you how to install a Pentair Clean & Clear Cartridge Filter (320 Series shown). It is fairly easy as it is just plumbing and no electrical needed. I prefer the Pentair filters since the cartridges seem more durable and the filter itself, the fiberglass & clamp seem to last a long time. You do not need to add D.E. to a Cartridge filter.

The D.E. Filter (Diatomaceous Earth) is supposed to give you greater clarity and filter more particles but the newer Cartridge filters work just as well. In fact you can’t tell the difference at all. The only difference is that you can back wash a D.E. filter between cleanings, so if your pool gets lots of use or very dirty, you will have to clean a cartridge filter more than every 6 months.

Here is what I used for this job:
Magic Lube Silicone lube for the O-ring filter Unions
2″ PVC pipe (about 10 ft)
2″ Male Adapter (Threaded fitting for the top of the pump)
Plasto Joint Stick (I used it on the 2″ Male Adapter instead or Teflon Tape)
2″ Slip 90 Degree Elbows (about 6 of them)
2″ Slip Couplings (didn’t use them but you may need them).
Teflon Tape for the pressure gauge
    Weldon 12130 1/2 Pint 704 PVC Cement, Gray or if you can get it;
Weldon Pool Heavy 746 PVC Cement, Gray.
    .
    Pool-Tite Glue Instructions:
Shake can well. Use a primer to clean the pipe fittings (priming step is not needed for non-pressure pipes less than 4″ in diameter. Apply liberal coat of cement to pipe depth of the socket, leave no uncoated surface. Apply a thin coat inside if the fitting, avoid puddling, Apply a second coat to the pipe. Assemble parts Quickly. Cement must be fluid. If cement surface has dried recoat both parts. Push pipe firmly into fitting giving it a ¼ turning motion. Hold pipe and fitting together for 30 seconds to avoid it popping out. Glue can get old so if it is gel like don’t use it.

It took about 1 ½ hours total.

I wait 24 hours before I charge the system and turn everything back on. A bit of overkill but I don’t want to re-plumb any leaks later.

I also use a very generous amount of PVC cement as seen in the video.

    SIZING YOUR FILTER:

There are basically three sizes that I use, the 320 (comparable to a 36sq ft D.E. filter) the 420 (Comparable to a 48 sq ft D.E filter) and the 520 (comparable to a 60 sq ft D.E. filter).

MODEL: Sq. Ft per minute Turnover capacity Filtration 8 hours
    CCP320 1 320 120 gallons 57,600 gallons
    CCP420 1 420 150 gallons 72,000 gallons
    CCP520 1 520 150 gallons 72,000 gallons

You want your filter to turn over the water at least twice every 8 hours to filter out the bacteria and particles. So the 320 series will work up to 25,000 gallons of water. Both the 420 and 520 filter the same amount which would be about a 35,000 gallon pool.

I prefer a cartridge filter over D.E. Filter for several reasons. The D.E. filters are messy especially if you have an all cement backyard without a good drainage system for the D.E. when you clean them.

The D.E. you charge the filter with is also a Carcinogen, with long term exposure causing cancer (us pool guys out there).

The cartridges last a long time with proper cleaning (my filter is 8 years old with the same cartridges whereas the grids tend to get holes in them and each grid is around ($35.00).

D.E. filters are just plain messy to clean. It gets everywhere and takes weeks to wash out. I know I mentioned they are messy twice, but you will enjoy the cartridge filter once you start to clean it regularly.

Water lines are under constant pressure and can leak if not firmly tightened. See how to fix. More tips at https://www.geappliances.com.
